Zodiac Blanket Crochet-Along

Interested in your horoscope? Crochet along with us and create your own zodiac blanket embossed with one or all of the horoscope signs!

It's your choice, make your crocheted blanket the size you desire, your squares as large or small as you like, in the color scheme you prefer.

I'll show you just how versatile crocheted blanket patterns can be.

Every week or so I'll put up a new crochet-along square pattern with free instructions, and we can all work together to create our own crocheted zodiac blanket.

The first step is to choose your color scheme. An easy way to do this is to think about where you will use your horoscope rug. Will you throw it across your bed or sofa? Will you use it as a car rug? Will it be a gift for a special occasion - New Baby, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Wedding, Birthday, or a Pet Blanket? Mine is a Mother's Day gift for my mum. She loved the color scheme I used for my bedspread, so I've repeated it here. If you've chosen different colors, make a list of what you've chosen, beside the colors you're substituting them for.

The next question is size. Will it be large enough for a bedspread, or small enough for a baby blanket?

Will you include all the Zodiac signs - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Sun, and Moon, or only some of them?

You might prefer monogrammed letters, Christmas motifs, or flowers!

Below is a grid pattern showing the arrangement of the squares.

My blanket is bedspread size and is 8 squares long by 6 squares wide, plus 2 rounds of edging. It is photographed on our double bed, and consists of 12 cream squares [each one illustrating one of the horoscope signs], 12 dusty pink squares, and 24 mixed squares. If you wanted to make your blanket 9 squares long and 7 squares wide, this would give you 2 more cream squares to decorate and you could include the Sun and Moon signs.

Do you want to compose your zodiac rug of squares as large as mine, or would you prefer to make them smaller? If you'd like your crocheted squares smaller than mine, you need to work out how many rows or rounds will give you the desired size square. This can easily be done by looking at the tension measurement in the pattern instructions.

Draw a plan like mine above, of your Zodiac Blanket on a piece of paper, noting any color changes. Include the length and width measurements along the edges.

Once you have worked out the approximate overall size, and then the size and number of squares you need, you can estimate the amount of yarn required using my calculations [Materials] as a guide - if you want your squares to measure half the finished size of mine, calculate half the amount of yarn given, and multiply by the number of dusty pink squares you are including in your zodiac blanket, then add enough extra yarn to work the pink rounds in the mixed crocheted squares you're including. Do the same with the cream squares. Calculate each color yarn similarly and note the amounts you require. It is much better to buy all the yarn at the beginning, in case the dye lots change before you complete your project. Once you've purchased the yarn and hook, CLICK HERE and we can begin crocheting!

When all granny squares are complete, you may assemble your rug and finish it off with a decorative edging.
