Aries Star Sign

The star sign Aries, is the first sign in the zodiac, spanning the period from 21st March to 20th April. The symbol represents the pointed face and horns of the ram.

If you haven't crocheted all of your dusty pink granny squares, cream granny squares, or mixed motifs yet, leave the dusty pink and mixed color motifs for now, and concentrate on finishing all your cream squares. We're up to the "making and adding of your horoscope symbols" stage.

If you've decided not to display horoscope star sign symbols, but to use monogrammed letters, Christmas motifs, or flowers instead, now is the time for you to make and attach them.

If you're not decorating your cream squares at all, this is the time for you to complete all of the granny squares, so you will be ready to assemble your horoscope blanket and add your chosen edging.

Aries Horoscope Sign

The first step in creating your Aries star sign is to make a twisted cord. You will need three twisted cords [the length given below] to make the twelve horoscope star signs[if you're working your squares the same size as mine]. If you're making your squares smaller, you will need to adjust the thickness of your twisted cords, and the number required - If your squares are half the size of mine, use half the amount of strands.

Materials: 1 100g ball 8 ply synthetic burgundy yarn, knitting needle, sewing needle, burgundy sewing thread, elastic threader or small safety pin.

Twisted Cord Yarn Lengths: 4 strands x 4.5 metres [180ins] long.

Print out the 14cm x 14cm Arian pdf file, the 10cm x 10cm Arian pdf, or the 6cm x 6cm Arian pdf, depending on the size of your squares. Carefully cut out the symbol. You will need to sticky tape the outer edge to mend the Aries template. Trim, position, and pin the template in the center of your cream square as shown in the photograph below right.

Attach elastic threader or small safety pin to the end of your twisted cord that doesn't have a knot.

Step 1: Working from the back of your cream square, thread your twisted cord through your motif between the stitches at the left tip of your Aries horoscope sign. Pull through until the knot sits firmly against the back of your motif.

Position and pin the cord into place, as shown at right.
Thread your twisted cord from front to back between the stitches at the central point where the horns meet.

Step 2: Thread from back to front between the stitches at the base of your Aries symbol. Position and pin the cord into place, inside template. Thread your twisted cord from front to back between the stitches at the outer right edge.

Knot your twisted cord firmly, so that the knot sits snugly against the back of your cream square. Make another knot approximately 2cm [.75ins] from the previous knot. Cut between knots. Use the remaining cord for your next star sign [Taurus].

Remove template. Using your sewing needle and burgundy thread, carefully stitch your Aries star sign into place.

When all granny squares are complete, you may assemble your rug and finish it off with a decorative edging.
